Kamala Harris wants to change Columbus Day to ‘Indigenous People’s Day’

As reported by SFGate

During a campaign event in New Hampshire, California Sen. Kamala Harris said she would be willing to change the name of Columbus Day to “Indigenous Peoples’ Day.”

According to BuzzFeed News, the 2020 presidential candidate was asked by an audience member at a Monday event in Portsmouth if she would support renaming the national holiday to honor Native Americans instead of Italian explorer Christopher Columbus.

“Sign me up,” Harris replied.

Progressives have long wanted to change the name of the controversial holiday, and in January 2018, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted 10-1 to officially refer to the holiday as “Indigenous People’s Day.”

Aaron Peskin was the only supervisor to vote against the measure, citing angry emails from Italian-Americans in his district who felt the holiday was part of their own ancestral heritage.
