President Trump’s State of the Union was viewed favorably by almost three quarters of those who watched it, according to a CBS poll.
The CBS Evening News instant poll found the president’s address had a 76 percent approval rating with a disapproval rating of only 24 percent. Seventy-two percent said they approved of the president’s comments on immigration.
The address was Trump’s first since Democrats took control of the House in the 2018 midterm elections. The speech focused on unity and bipartisanship but also hit hard on the president’s immigration policies and plans for a wall at the U.S./Mexico border.
Similar results were seen in a CNN poll which showed almost 60 percent had a “very positive” reaction to the president’s speech. The positive response cut across demographic lines – men (60 percent); women (58 percent); viewers under age 50 (54 percent); those 50 and older (61 percent); those with a college degree (52 percent); and without college degrees (63 percent).
The address was most well-received among Republicans, 87 percent of whom had a “very positive” response. Fifty-seven percent of independents said the same while only 36 percent of Democrats viewed the speech positively.
